Barley plants are either spring or winter annual grasses. Winter varieties are planted in the fall because they require a period of exposure to the cold in order to produce flowers and set seeds. Spring varieties do not require exposure to cold in order to develop seed heads and should be seeded as early as possible in the spring. Barley is a cereal grain that serves as a major animal feed crop. As feed it is nearly equal in nutritive value to kernel corn. Barley is also grown as a forage crop for livestock when harvested in the vegetative stage.
