Alfalfa is a 3-5 year crop that is an excellent source of protein. It is a legume that provides nitrogen, but uses much potassium. Its fiber is not as digestible as grasses. The feeding qualities can be improved by adding late-heading grasses to alfalfa. It also reduces weeds and insect pressure. Alfalfa is the most drought-tolerant legume, but does not thrive under wet conditions.
