Orchardgrass is an old reliable standby in many parts of the U.S. It produces more feed during the summer because it is more heat and drought tolerant than most cool season grasses. The new varieties are more palatable than previous ones, have a later heading, and are less clumpy. It is important to leave a 3-4” stubble when grazing or mowing or orchardgrass will not persist. It does well in areas with less fertility and moisture, but is not adapted for very wet areas.
